Interview : Textile Designer Niki Jones

Contemporary Scandinavian bedroom with dark walls and geometric grey bedding by designer Niki JonesHi everyone! How are you all today? I hope you’ve enjoyed the long Bank Holiday weekend if you live in the UK. Traditionally, this is a time when lots of us take part in DIY and try to get our homes ready for the greatly anticipated summer season. I’m happy to say that I actually haven’t been doing any DIY at all this weekend. That’s because my kitchen makeover, which has been in progress for a year, is finally finished. I can’t tell you what a relief that is. So this weekend we have been mostly enjoying our new space. I will be sharing a progress post with you guys shortly and then the final reveal will follow once I’ve had the time (and good light) to photograph it. So that’s all very exciting!

Something else exciting however, is that I am hosting a fantastic giveaway today, which I am sure you’ll love. A few weeks ago, I received an email from Niki Jones, a fantastic designer who wanted to introduce me to her work. I have no idea how I hadn’t come across her before if I’m honest and that’s why I really love it when people reach out to me. Once I had checked out Niki’s website, I knew she would be a perfect candidate to feature on The Design Sheppard so I immediately responded and asked if I could interview her so I could give you guys a more in-depth insight into her work. Luckily, she agreed to make time for us. So here it is: Read More…

Giveaway : £50 to spend on Wall Art at Posterlounge

posterlounge-13-theusualdesigners

I have recently become much more confident when it comes to choosing artwork for my home. I’ve always found it a real challenge to find artwork that I love and that I won’t get bored of easily. The fear that I will go off it quickly has, for years, prevented me from even buying any…how ridiculous!. Even when we lived in rented accommodation and artwork was the obvious way to personalise our home a bit, I still couldn’t make the leap and actually buy anything. I’ve got a lot better since we bought our flat though and now if I see artwork that I like, I try not to overthink it and just go for it. So what if I go off it in a year or two? As long as it’s not too expensive and it makes me happy, does it really matter? Earlier this year, I created a lovely gallery wall in our master bedroom, which I am so pleased with and now I’m planning to make another one for our livingroom and I was really excited while choosing the artwork.

Giveaway : Win £50 to spend at First Choice Lighting

Chelsea townhouse

So, have you noticed that the evenings aren’t quite as light anymore? You know what that means don’t you? I know, I know, you don’t want me to say it but we can’t avoid it and it’s probably better if we just face up to it and start preparations. Summer is almost over and that means we need to start thinking about how to transition our homes from one season to the next.

One of the hardest things that I find about autumn and winter personally is not so much the cold, wet weather, although it does get a bit tiresome after a while, but actually the change in light, or should I say the lack thereof? It’s extremely difficult to go from bright sunny mornings and long, light evenings to waking in the pitch black (especially if you have kids that wake you up at the crack of dawn) and coming home from work in the dark too. And that is why it is really important to get the lighting in our homes right. Read More…

Making the Most of Your Outdoor Space

Kettler Palma Sofa set Rattan

Kettler Palma sofa set in rattan

The past week or two have definitely started to feel a little spring like don’t you think? The sun has shown itself more and I’m really beginning to shake off those winter blues. The warmer weather has got me thinking about spending more time outside and of course this has made me think about our outdoor space. Don’t get me wrong, we’re lucky to even have a garden as we live in a first floor flat and I’m truly grateful that we have this outside space, but it’s not exactly the calm oasis I’d like it to be. It’s on a bit of a slope and is very overlooked. I’m hoping that we’ll be able to do some work on it to make it more of a usable space that we want to spend time in. However, we’ve got so much going on at home at the moment as we are just about to get a new bathroom and do a makeover in the kitchen so unfortunately the garden is going to have to wait. But that doesn’t stop me thinking about all the lovely ways we could give our garden a more personal feel by bringing the comfort of our indoor space outdoors. Read More…

VQ : Super Sexy Audio Devices for Women

View Quest Hepburn MKII DAB Radio in mustard

VQ is a brand I have known about for quite some time now. I reviewed one of their products back in September last year and I have really enjoyed using our Bardot DAB+ Radio ever since. What I didn’t realise at the time though was the fact that the company actually has a really interesting story behind it. All of the audio products that it produces are designed specifically with women in mind. Now this is a subject that really interests me and a few years ago whilst working as staff writer at Designer Kitchen & Bathroom Magazine, I researched and wrote a really interesting article all about gender dialogue in the design world and to what extent this influences product design. It was such a fun article to write and if you are interested you can read it by clicking the image below: Read More…

Giveaway : Win £200 to spend at Zespoke Design

Zespoke

Hi friends! I have another great giveaway for you today which I hope you will appreciate. I have teamed up with Zespoke Design to offer one lucky reader the chance to win £200 to spend on the Zespoke website. For those of you who are not familiar with Zespoke, I’d like to tell you a little bit more about the company. It is a furniture manufacturer based in Northern Ireland that creates funky retro designs and produces high quality, hand-crafted coffee tables, console tables, side tables, TV stands and radiator covers. Each piece is made individually for the customer and is available in approximately 30 different colour options with endless combinations. So you can choose something understated and minimalist or you can take a risk and choose something more daring that is bursting with colour and pattern. Personally, I really like the look of that table above and the combination of the orange with the high gloss walnut makes a strong statement, but in a very subtle way, if that makes sense. So what do you have to do to win this giveaway? Well as usual you need to enter via the Rafflecopter widget below. Leave a comment on the post that explains why you deserve to win the £200 and what you would spend it on. You can gain extra entries via the various social media options available too. I hope that’s clear and all that is left to say is goodluck!

Giveaway : Win £250 worth of John Lewis Vouchers

ahi-perfect-homeFinally, January is done and dusted! I don’t know about you but I always find it such a long, hard month to get through. After all the festivities of Christmas and New Year have come to an end January just seems like such an anti-climax. The mornings are dark, the evenings are dark and the days are often cold and drizzly. It’s definitely not my favourite time of year. Added to that is the inevitable financial shortfall after December’s excesses, which means all household improvements have been put on the back burner. But as February arrives I always start to feel more positive and have more energy. Spring no longer seems quite so far away and my thoughts once again turn to DIY and home improvements. I now feel ready to up tools and continue where I left off with all those projects I started before the festive period. Makeover time it is. And it can be for you too! I’ve teamed up with Good To Be Home to offer one lucky reader the chance to win £250 worth of John Lewis vouchers. There are so many gorgeous home products available at John Lewis at the moment and I recommend that you check out the SS15 Trends for some lovely new products that will help give your home a fresh new look for Spring. Below are some of my favourite products from the new Fusion collection. Read More…

Giveaway : Win £500 worth of Wallpaper from Mr Perswall

Cast Concrete Wallpaper by Mr Perswall

Today my lovlies I have a fantastic giveaway for you as I have teamed up with the Swedish wallpaper manufacturer Mr Perswall who has kindly offered to give one lucky Design Sheppard reader £500 worth of wallpaper. How fantastic! And what a wonderful way to start 2015 that would be. Although it would be a very hard decision to make as the Mr Perswall collection is rather extensive and features some really standout papers. Whether you are looking for wallpaper that features photographs of Paris (one of my favourite cities), action shots of extreme sports, fashion-inspired imagery or wallpaper that imitates the texture and appearance of other materials, Mr Perswall has it all. My personal favourites are the Captured Reality and Daily Details collections as both of these explore the beauty that can be found in the most mundane of details. I am particularly fond of the papers that depict some of my favourite materials such as concrete and marble. Thanks to the latest photographic technology these papers can be printed in extraordinarily high resolution meaning that even from a short distance it is almost impossible to tell that this is in fact wallpaper and not a wall of tin tiles for example. However, if none of these float your boat you always have the option of creating your own personal wall mural by uploading your own digital image. If I had even the slightest bit of talent when it comes to graphic design, I would have without doubt designed my own wallpaper by now. Read More…

Giveaway : Copper Plated Wall Lamp

copper exposed bulb wall light lifestyle

I’m pretty sure you have all noticed already but one of the biggest interior trends for Autumn/Winter 2014 is copper. I love this trend and copper is definitely my favourite metallic finish of all as it adds a real sense of warmth and elegance to interiors. I’ve been pinning all my favourite copper finds on my Metallics Trend Pinterest board and seeing all those beautiful copper products in one inspiring place just makes me fall in love with this look even more. I’ve decided that my mission for this winter is to incorporate some copper into my own home. I’m pretty sure that it would look just divine in my new indigo bedroom and I’m so excited to start hunting down the perfect products. I’m thinking that copper lighting would make a real statement and then maybe various smaller copper accessories to keep it within budget.  Read More…

Giveaway : A Fully-Fitted Composite Yale Door

edwardian-yale-door

When we think about making the most of our homes it is all too easy to fall into the trap of focusing solely on what lies inside our four walls. We make a real effort to ensure our rooms are homely, cosy, appealing and express our personality, but we often neglect what goes on on the outside and this is a big mistake. Of vital importance is the front door, as this is the very first thing that people will see when they approach our homes so it’s important that it makes a good impression. It says a lot about what people can expect of our homes and it speaks volumes about what’s inside and the people that live there. Creating a welcoming entrance to our homes will not only make us feel great about where we live and put a smile on our faces each and every time we come home, but it also gives us something to be proud of when guests come to visit. It becomes even more important if and when we decide to put our homes on the market. Potential buyers will make a snap judgement about a property before they even step through the door and a neglected, dilapidated or uninviting front door will do little to excite them about what lies within. House hunters want curb appeal and nothing can impact the look of the front of the house like the front door. So it’s vital to get it right! Read More…
