So, have you noticed that the evenings aren’t quite as light anymore? You know what that means don’t you? I know, I know, you don’t want me to say it but we can’t avoid it and it’s probably better if we just face up to it and start preparations. Summer is almost over and that means we need to start thinking about how to transition our homes from one season to the next.
One of the hardest things that I find about autumn and winter personally is not so much the cold, wet weather, although it does get a bit tiresome after a while, but actually the change in light, or should I say the lack thereof? It’s extremely difficult to go from bright sunny mornings and long, light evenings to waking in the pitch black (especially if you have kids that wake you up at the crack of dawn) and coming home from work in the dark too. And that is why it is really important to get the lighting in our homes right.
The first thing to think about is what each room is used for and this will help you to decide what kind of lighting is required. For example, areas of the home where you work, such as the kitchen or a home office, will need to be well lit with task lighting, whereas cosy corners in livingrooms and bedrooms may require a more subtle, atmospheric approach. For the best results, you should try to layer your lighting to combine functional, practical and decorative elements in each room. This requires the mixing and matching of multiple light sources.
Luckily, I have a giveaway for you today that will help you get ahead of the game in preparing your home for the winter months. Working with the folks over at First Choice Lighting I am able to offer one lucky Design Sheppard reader the opportunity to win a £50 voucher to spend on lighting for their home.
