Having written a couple of blog posts now about the trend for knitting in interior design, I have rekindled my love of knitting and have embarked on some new craft projects. Admittedly I’m a still a beginner and haven’t yet mastered many different stitches so I do have to stick to pretty simple patterns, but nonetheless is it incredibly enjoyable and I hope to improve my knitting repertoire soon. Just before Christmas I started thinking about taking up crochet as well so that I could adorn my knitted goods with little motifs and embellishments. And then, with a little encouragement from my mum, my brother bought me some lovely crochet supplies for Christmas so I’ve spent a few hours over the holiday practising. It looks really simple, but I’ve discovered it is actually a little more complicated than it looks. Whilst I’m just a novice to knitting and crochet, there are some designers out there who are creating some really exciting things using knitting and crochet. One such designer is Shauna Richardson, who has created a unique body of work that she calls ‘crochetdermy’.

In her work, Richardson explores the theory that ‘Anything can be art’. She uses crochet to sculpt realistic life-size animals in uncanny taxidermy-like forms. Richardson has received much critical acclaim. Her work is receiving worldwide media coverage and is being sold across the globe. She is currently exhibiting a life-sized brown bear as part of ‘The Power of Making’ exhibition held at the V&A throughout January 2012.

I think these are absolutely brilliant, but it will be a long time before I can crochet one for myself and whilst there are no prices on Shauna’s website I’m as sure as hell that I can’t afford to buy one! If I could I think it would have to be the lioness.
Do you have a pattern for the boar’s head?
Thanks
Hi Doris, unfortunately not. I don’t make them, I just wrote about them. You can find out more about them by visiting Shauna’s website. The link is in the post.
