Burlesque makes its mark in residential interiors

The sumptuous decadence of burlesque has been present in interiors for some time now and I am a big fan of this trend. And whilst I believe that incorporating too many cabaret-inspired products into an interior scheme can be overkill and indeed gaudy and somewhat tasteless, I think that when used sparingly it can make for a gorgeously sophisticated decor.

As you have probably seen from my previous post on the subject I am a huge fan of these saucy wallpapers by Dupenny. They do a fantastic paper called Burlesque featuring a number of scantily clad dancing girls in seductive poses. But it was only when researching for this post that I noticed that range has now been expanded to include armchairs, lamps and cushions as well as other homewares.

The products by Dupenny represent the more humorous, theatrical and exaggerated side to burlesque but there is also a more sultry, seductive side to the burlesque trend in interiors. This features luxurious fabrics and upholstery, over-sized furniture and the draped effect, not to mention fringing and tassles. One of my favourite fringed products is the Fringe Lamp by Moooi that you can see at the top of this post. It is also available in black.

The Fiela Feather Chandelier by Haldane Martin incorporates feather, another very iconic accessory of cabaret and burlesque dancers. And there are also some great wallpapers around at the moment that capture the image of these enormous feather fans that the girls use to tease and seduce us.

Cole & Son‘s Feather Fan wallpaper is part of the Frontier collection and illustrates this in a very subtle yet recognisable way making for a very upmarket, elegant feel to the room.

Continuing the feather theme, there are a great many beautiful flock wallpapers on the market at moment that are perfect for creating a burlesque interior. This flock is called Paradiso Black and is available from the Flock Wallpaper Company.

There are also some stunning wallpapers out that that imitate the look and feel of lace. Some of my personal favourites are this paper from the Wallpower collection of Nono Designs, which is available in black and white or cerise and black and also this paper from French company Elitis entitled Noir Desirs or TP 155 02 from the Tenue de Soiree collection.

But I also really like the Inspire paper by BN  Wallcoverings, which clearly takes its inspiration from fishnet stockings.
