I don’t know about you guys but it already feels like Christmas and New Year was a million months ago. As usual, once the festive dust has settled and all the decorations have been packed away for another year, we all slip back into the daily grind and winter no longer seems quite so magical without all the twinkly lights and mirror finishes.
By mid January we realise we have at least another few months of this dreary weather to endure before spring arrives and it’s all made that little bit more depressing by the fact that Christmas was very costly so money is tight. It’s usually around this time also that we start to give up on those New Year’s resolutions that we were so invested in a few weeks previously.
Our motivational levels start to sink and I think you’ll agree that the combination of all this doom and gloom makes us start to feel like we need to take action and start making changes. Today, the third Monday in January, has become known as Blue Monday and is allegedly the most depressing day of the year for countries in the Northern Hemisphere.
But fear not, I have teamed up with the brains behind the new online paint service Dulux Amazing Space and together we can overcome the January blues and turn Blue Monday into ‘Happy Colour Monday’. How can we do that, you ask? Well, the New Year is a great time to think about refreshing our home interiors and there is no simpler or easier way to do that than with a simple lick of paint to create a whole new look. Dulux Amazing Space has selected five bright and beautiful colours from the Amazing Space Paint range that they believe will give a new lease of life to our homes and help us fend off the winter blues until the spring arrives.
Colour 1: Willow Creek 4
Willow Creek 4 is a summery green colour that will instantly give your home a fresh and vibrant lift. The added bonus with this shade is that it fits perfectly with one of the big interior trends for this year since the Pantone Color Institute recently announced ‘Greenery’ as colour of the year for 2017. You can pair Willow Creek 4 with soft creams, deep greens and gold accents to transform your space into a serene sanctuary. If you need advice on decorating with green and how to use it in your interior, check out the interview I did with Applied Colour Psychology specialist Karen Haller here.
Colour 2: Spring Breeze 2
Vibrant Spring Breeze 2 is a bright and happy shade of yellow that will help you to inject some sunshine into even the darkest corners of your home. You can use it in small accents or, alternatively, create a lively feature wall with it if you’re not brave enough to go all out yellow. You can add hints of pale grey or blue to your room by adding some nice prints and accessories to give your space a fun and exciting makeover. I also interviewed Karen about using yellow in interiors so you can get some expert advice here. You can of course also consult the Dulux Amazing Space paint service when trying to choose the perfect shade and finish for your needs.
Colour 3: Caribbean Dawn 1
If you’re looking to bring a little more warmth into your home, why not try a rich and warm colour like Caribbean Dawn 1. This warm coral tone will pop against clean whites, and complement soft pinks and orange accents bringing soft sunset tones into your home. This ombre paint effect is a great technique to try if you are feeling a bit more adventurous with your decorating plans. You can read a tutorial on how to create the ombre paint effect here as explained by Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director at Dulux.
Colour 4: Javan Dawn 4
Javan Dawn 4 is the perfect shade to use if you’re looking to inject lots of energy and brightness into your bathroom. For me this shade evokes memories of the the sky, the sea, and sunny summer holidays. Blue is the perfect tone to bring a calming feel into your home and wash those winter blues away. You can even get this paint with a steam resistant finish to protect your walls against those long, relaxing hours spent in the bath.
Colour 5: Golden Jasmine 3
If you’re not quite feeling brave enough to go for these bold colours above, there’s always Golden Jasmine 3 which is a sleek and cosy neutral. This soft creamy tone can really be used in any room that needs freshening up and renewing. It’s a very flexible and versatile colour so pops of any stronger colour will enhance this tone and subtler accents will help you achieve a simple and timeless transformation.
